Night of Competencies

I had an unbelievable night a few weeks ago.... I did nearly every job to do on the floor - in ONE night.... I could have had almost all of my yearly competencies signed off in that one night!

I started out with 2 outpatients, which I evaluated and subsequently sent home.

Then, there was a birth where I was assigned to "catch the baby." After the baby was stabilized, I accepted the mom and baby as a post-partum couplet and cared for them for about 3 hours or so.

Then, a cesarean section was called, and I was asked to be the scrub nurse for it, which I did.

After that, I said to one of the nurses, mistakenly, "About the only thing I haven't done tonight is labor."

Yep, you guessed it. In walked a mom in active labor, 8cm dilated at around 5 am. Do I need to say who was assigned to take this labor patient?

She had a very quick labor, as she was a gravida 6.... And she ended up having an "unattended" childbirth - which means her labor nurse - me - delivered her baby.

Well, that, thankfully, was the end of my 12 hour shift.

Unbelievable!!!!!
